Identity, dough and territory in editorial form

The Pepe in Grani publication builds an editorial story around identity, dough and territory. The project includes concept and layout, with an ongoing relationship between text and images of the making process. The cover combines the brand mark, concentric arches and a brown-and-cream palette; spreads bring together generous spaces, headings and content in Italian and English. Black-and-white photographs show hands and gestures associated with dough. The work turns themes from the brand’s gastronomic culture into a reading journey that connects the account of its ideas with the concrete activity of making.

Design objective

The publication makes the themes of the Pepe in Grani story readable by connecting identity, making and territory. The publication addresses the need to alternate explanation and imagery. Its pages provide space for text while retaining the concrete presence of photographs showing hands, flour and dough, bringing the narrative back to the activity it describes.

The work

The concept and layout define the cover, openings and spreads. A brown-and-cream palette accompanies the brand mark and the cover’s concentric arches. Inside, light typographic headings and Italian and English text appear alongside black-and-white photographs devoted to the gestures of dough preparation, connecting written themes with the gestures and material of making.

Design rationale

Generous space and restrained headings give the central themes room to emerge within a focused graphic composition. Black-and-white photography directs attention towards hands and material. The relationship between text-led pages and photographs creates a rhythm suited to moving from broader ideas to close views of the work involved in preparing the dough.
